I've been MIA from the blogging world for a LONG time! Hoping to get back in the swing of things here soon - possibly with a new website and blog, on it's way soon!

In the meantime, I was thrilled to do Kayla's maternity shoot for baby #2 recently, and thought I should at least include some photos in this blog post.

We raced the sun setting, but were able to get a few great shots. Congratulations Kayla, Ken & big brother Zander!

PITY PARTY

My springtime/summer allergies hit me harder than ever, in all its seasonal glory - constant sneezing, drippy nose, sinus headaches: the whole miserable nine yards. I am convinced that there is mutant pollen floating around outside that is wreaking havoc on my immune system.

The consequences have been brutal. I've slipped up on household chores and making dinner, just to slum it on the couch instead with Netflix, my iPhone (for endless games of Words with Friends and that darn WebMD app that might turn me into a hypochondriac) and a tissue box, letting my kids run an absolute muck. My medicine cabinet has become my sampler box for the allergy medicine du jour. I could be the poster child for at least 5 different allergy medicine companies. The before-version, of course. I'm still waiting on the miracle drug to end this allergy horror.

I'm hoping to regain some functionality soon or I'll miss out on the tiny bit of a summer us Seattleites get every year. Stay tuned!

HANDPRINTS

I've always said that having children put things into perspective for me. From the moment I laid eyes on my firstborn, life as I knew it was altogether different. And truly, I'd have it no other way.

On Friday, my preschool daughters brought out two large brown envelopes, each adorned with shiny ribbons. They insisted I open them, even though Mothers Day was still a couple of days away. I told them I should wait, but they were so excited, I finally agreed to anyway.

Inside each envelope were identical sheets of paper that had a poem on the left. To the right of the poem was a red paint handprint - the handprint on one sheet of paper was slightly bigger than the handprint on the other. My oldest daughter Eden asked me to read the poem on hers first - hers was the bigger of the two handprints.

I read it slowly so she could try to follow along by looking at the words, and by the time I reached the end, I was completely in tears. I gave her a hug, and Taimane asked me to read hers to her. I obliged, and even though I'd JUST read the same exact poem moments before, reading hers had the same effect on me, and I couldn't control the tears.

They smiled, happy that their little Mothers Day gifts had such an effect on me, and I squeezed them tight. I sat there and thought about them as babies. I couldn't believe how quickly the years were going by, and how grown my little girls suddenly were. I stared at their handprints, and held their little hands, hoping that no matter how old they got, they'd never get tired of holding their mommy's hand, something they love to do now.

My life has been richly blessed as a mother, and I couldn't be more grateful for handprints on walls and furniture, and more thankful to my Heavenly Father for choosing to entrust 3 incredibly special children to me.

I LOVE LIGHT - creamy, golden sunlight, most especially. It's a rarity in the Northwest, but when the sun makes it's random appearance, it's a dream. Sunday was no exception, and I was grateful for the chance to take advantage of it. I had the BEST time chasing the light around with Lani & Eki. And they literally chased it around with me - in extremely high heels, up hills, and all!

Beauty runs deep with these two; as stunning as they are on the outside, they are even more so on the inside. While working on their individual shoots, I couldn't settle on less than 50 favorites - it's easy to pass them off as professional models, but they're not (yet!). VOGUE covers, here they come! Love these girls to pieces! xoxo

ONE!

"Looks like Daddy will still be outnumbered...but not by himself!" The ultrasound tech's choice of words made me pause to think a minute. She must've noticed my momentary confusion, because her next words were, "It's a BOY!" I remember how my heart skipped a beat, and the wave of excitement that came over me. Finally..a boy!

In just 5 short months later, our bouncing baby boy was born, with a full head of hair and the sweetest little face. His mommy fell in LOVE!

One year later, here we are! I can hardly believe my Israel is ONE. He is my most even-tempered child, and the star of the show at home. His sisters looooove him to no end, so he gets a little spoiled sometimes. He is sweet as can be, and my little cuddle bug. The year has definitely flown by way too fast for me..I wish I could keep my kids babies for longer than they are.

PREFACE TO THIS POST: I made a list in December. #1 on the list was to be a better blogger, and I have MORE than failed that one already, and we're just a few days into March. In an effort to get back on the saddle and make a real effort to blog, I've decided to dedicate some space to another number on that official list. #3 is one I'm actually doing OK with so far; it is, quite simply, to read more books. "On the Bookshelf" will be a series of blog posts I will write periodically, with my thoughts on books I've read. This is mostly to keep track of what I've read throughout the year, and to make me feel like I'm actually sticking to a resolution :)..lol. But, maybe someone will pick up one of these books some time after reading these too.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

The Help was technically the 4th book I’ve read this year, but the first I’ve decided to start this series of blog posts with. I knew about half way through it that if I was going to “review” the books I read, this is the one that I'd begin with.

I read the ENTIRE book on my iPhone using the Kindle app. It took forever to read this way, but that in itself should attest to how hard it was to put it down, and how obsessed I became with it. I have my phone with me just about everywhere I go, and so, the book technically went with me everywhere too.

I was completely wrapped up in it, drawn to each of the three narrators of the book, feeling like I wanted to reach through the pages (or iPhone screen in my case) and give them each a hug. I laughed, I cried, I recounted chapters of the story to my husband as if we had to do something about what was going on in whatever section of the book I was reading. I’m sure he thought I was nuts. At some point in the story, it began to hit home, and I have been beside myself since.

Set in the early 1960s, during the climb of civil rights movements in the U.S., it portrays the lives of 3 women in the deep South - two African-American domestic workers and one Caucasian woman who dreams of being a writer. Stockett does a remarkable job transitioning between perspectives and clearly establishing an important message throughout the book. It’s a heartstring tugger, and I found myself still reeling from the emotional high I was on after I finished it.

Growing up, my grandparents and parents hired domestic workers from Fiji who worked in our homes doing housework and cooking and caring for the children. Reading The Help took me back to my childhood various times in the book. While it wasn't nearly the same dynamic between my family and the women who worked for us, as it was between southern Caucasian families and their hired help in the 1960’s, there was still this onset of memories and emotions, as I felt like I could relate to the story sometimes.

In 1981, Naomi Bituroqoiwasa, who I affectionately called “Omzie,” came to work for my grandparents. I was born the following year, and my entire childhood, teenage years, and early adulthood are filled with memories of her. She passed away 5 years ago this May, and I miss her more than I have words to describe. She was simply another mother to me, who cared for me and had such an important hand in raising me. She never had children of her own, but I have no doubt in my mind that she loved me, my siblings, and my cousins as if we were hers. I wish my own children could’ve known her. Like a character in The Help, I hope and pray that I thanked her enough, that she knows how grateful I am to her and how much she’ll always, always mean to me.

Some of my cousins, brothers and I, and our last picture with her, taken in February 2006 in American Samoa. She passed away 3 months later.

DOWNTOWN TACOMA ENGAGEMENT : MARK + SHARON

There are photographs of them as children, standing side by side. In one, they're toddlers in Germany; and in another, they're about 10 or 11, and in Colorado. Their dads were in the military, and they relocated often while growing up. At various times during their childhood, they just happened to live in the same place. They reconnected years later by writing to each other, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Mark and Sharon have known each other all their lives, and in July, they'll promise to spend the rest of it together.

I corresponded with Mark over email for weeks regarding his wedding, and sadly, I was already booked on their wedding day, but was more than happy to do engagement photos for them. Over the course of our emails, I knew one thing for certain - Mark completely and utterly adored his wife-to-be. It wasn't until I met them for their engagement shoot in downtown Tacoma that I could see it for myself, and to add to the beauty of it, I could see that Sharon reciprocated the feeling as well.

RATE = DISTANCE OVER TIME

I had a long heart-to-heart with one of my brothers today, something I don't do quite often enough. Somewhere in our conversation, we talked about time and perspective, and I started to quickly do a mental run-through of the last 10 years. Where on earth did they go so quickly? Long after I'd hung up the phone with him, I was still beside myself at how fast the years have flown by, and I realized that it really is a matter of perspective. My oldest daughter is 5 - and yet, I remember bringing her home like it was yesterday. Time has seemed to speed up with age - and I'm still trying to get a grasp on it.

That said, I can't believe we're a week into 2011 already! I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye to 2010 - the year that brought me my son, a new house, and an interesting mix of opportunities and challenges. Nonetheless, here we are, and I am ever hopeful and anxious for all that 2011 will bring.

As late I am in saying it...Happy New Year!

WELCOMING BABY CHRISTIAN!

A new baby is the beginning of all things: wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities.

On December 23rd, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary, which we now share with our handsome grand-nephew, Christian Pelenato, who made his big debut into the world that morning. He joins 3 older siblings, and is precious as can be! The perfect Christmas blessing!!

CHRISTMAS 2010

After weeks of procrastinating, I "pulled off" our Christmas celebration with a last-minute 4-foot tree we bought and decorated 2 days shy of the big day, chocolate chip cookies we baked for Santa, and wrapped presents that took me until 4:00 am to finish Christmas morning. The looks on the girls' faces were truly priceless as they paraded downstairs to see if Santa had come, and it was all well worth it.

I am so very thankful to have such wonderful family and friends, both near and far, who made Christmas Day all the more special.

Christmastime is without a doubt, my FAVORITE time of the year. The sounds, the smells, the food!, the lights, everything. My best childhood memories are around Christmastime, and I've always intended it be that way for my kids too. It's about tradition, right? My husband finds a fresh tree every year and the decor goes up, the lights are bright on the tree each night, the Christmas candles burn, the Christmas songs play, we make Christmas treats, there's a visit to Snowflake Lane, we read about the true meaning of Christmas, and the kids are giddy for weeks. We rest assured that Santa will come and appreciate our holiday spirit.

This year is a little different.

It's 2 hours from December 20th and I don't have a tree up. I haven't wrapped a single gift, and that candle there? It's probably the closest thing I've got going to decorating. It smells like cranberry, which makes my living room smell slightly Christmasy.

My excuse(s)? Buying a new house in the middle of the holidays, the girls' birthdays, and our anniversary. A crazy work schedule, a million and ten things to do before the year is over. Packing. Cleaning. Expenses. Something had to give, and that was it: my Christmas Spirit.

So, I'm feeling a little Grinch-ish, Internet, and I have 5 days to figure this out. It'll be my son's first Christmas. My girls are captivated by the holidays this year. Eden can legibly write out the alphabet, so she sent Santa a letter (with some spelling help). Santa sent her back a video via the PortableNorthPole (coolest thing ever). She and Taimane actually get all the words right to "Jingle Bells" and "Santa's Coming to Town." They've been asking about making gingerbread houses and cookies and wrapping presents, and I've done zilch. I need the Procrastination-Fix-It-Fairy to swoop down and wave her magic wand and get it together for me. Let me know if anyone out there knows how I can find her. *Sigh.*

In a quick 12 months and 3 days after Eden was born, you made me a Mommy of 2.

You taught me that my heart's ability to love knows no bounds. I couldn't have imagined just how much one little girl could make me laugh and smile, or how this bundle of spunk and personality could have come from your daddy and me! I think I hang on your every word, just waiting to see what funny or sweet or extra-honest thing you have to say next. Don't grow up on me too fast.

I love you so very much, and I thank Heavenly Father and my lucky stars for you all at once.

Taimane is the life of the party in the Tagoa'i household, and she has blossomed into quite the little girl, with a mind all her own. As clearly as I remember welcoming Eden into the world, I remember when Taimane's arrival was imminent. Eden had turned 1, and although I was anxious to get the pregnancy over with, my emotions were on quite the rollercoaster. Looking back, I know I was so afraid of being a mommy to two little ones, so close in age - worried one would feel neglected or get less attention; and I wondered how on earth I could love another baby as much as I loved Eden. I had no idea that I would be JUST as overwhelmed with this insurmountable love for Taimane as soon as I heard her first cry and laid eyes on her, and that love has only multiplied infinitely since. She is truly such a special part of our family, with quick wits and a sweet smile that melts my heart.

I vividly remember this very day 5 years ago - this hefty little girl, 9-1/2 lbs with a head full of black hair, staring up at me. I recall feeling so overwhelmed with a love I hadn't known existed until I held her in my arms. I am thankful every moment of every day, that the Lord blessed me with my sweet Eden, and decided I was worthy enough to be her Mom. Her Daddy and I are so very proud of the little young lady she's growing up to be - she is patient and loving and kind, and we are truly SO blessed.

When I took the Guymons' 2009 holiday photos, baby Traysen was just a few months old. It's great to look back at their family photos and see how much their kids have grown - and the most changed of course is little Traysen, who is about 19 months old in this year's photos! Alaina does the best job at dressing her kids and matching them up so well for their photo shoots! This family is wonderful - the girls are in Alaina's Leap & Learn preschool again this year, and absolutely LOVE it! Trendon is still their favorite buddy, they're still enraptured by baby Traysen (and for a while, Eden wanted us to name Israel, "Traysen"), and they still adore Miss Krailyn :).

SUIAUNOA FAMILY : HOLIDAYS 2010 | Tacoma, WA

I say it often - here, and here, for example (and probably a dozen more times in other blog posts), how very special this little family is to me and my family. My middle daughter truly believes in the depths of her heart that she is actually Rose & Legi's oldest child, and no one can tell her any different :). I'm blessed that they love her, and Eden and Israel too, as if they were their own.

Little L is 9 and a half months of so much FUN in his first family holiday pictures. We bundled him up one cold winter morning and headed to downtown Tacoma. You'd never know it felt like 10 degrees outside judging from how great this family looks, right? :)

CHRISTMAS MEMORIES : The “Gingerbread-bread” House

My almost-5 year old asked me last night if I could get her a few things she’d need to build a gingerbread house – “It's Israel’s first Christmas, Mommy, and Taimane and I can build him one,” she added.

I asked her, “You mean, ‘a gingerbread-bread’ house?” with a smirk, and she looked at me with one of those are-you-kidding-me-mom looks. She responded slowly (for my benefit), “No - a gingerBREAD house, Mommy – there’s only one ‘bread.’” I laughed and told her there was once a time when she refused to say it any other way but “gingerbread-bread.”

I looked for this blog post on the very thing, and read it to her, thinking all the while, how on earth did she grow up so fast…

A little while ago, Eden brought home a small, plastic gingerbread girl from school. She excitedly told me it was a "gingerbread-bread girl," and has said "gingerbread" with the extra "bread" at the end ever since, even after being corrected. It's been one of her favorite little things to play with lately.

On Monday, Aunty Rose got a gingerbread house kit for the girls and she and Eden began putting it together :). Monday was FREEZING cold here, so all heaters were on full blast. That made it a bit difficult for the icing "glue" to set. After I picked up the girls that evening, Rose finished up putting it together and decorating it, and brought it by today. Eden was so thrilled to see her "gingerbread-bread house"!

THE LIST...OFFICIALLY

{Just a little disclosure here..this is long and really more about self-gratification, so consider yourself forewarned.}

It goes without fail. I start thinking about “resolutions” in December before the New Year.

In January, I’m ready to rock and roll, with all the resolve one could possibly muster up. By February/March-ish, rockin’ those resolutions becomes ahh, a “part-time job,” more or less.

April: it's a weekend thing. May: once a month maybe? June: What resolutions? Oh yeah, those. July: There's always next year...

And so goes the cycle - year in and year out. So here I am, Internet, thinking about resolutions again, and figuring that blogging them might keep me a little more accountable. Kinda like how “putting things in writing” makes those things official.

So I'm a little early, but I thought I better get a head start. Without further ado, here we go (in absolutely no particular order of importance, by the way)...

1. Be a better BLOGGER. Of the two thousand and ten things that 2010 brought this year, I've blogged just a tiny fraction. I used to have a family blog - updated with the crazy happenings of two little toddler girls' lives, and I loved it. I started a photography blog when I started this business, and kept it - for the most part - photography-related, with a few personal anecdotes here and there. I just want to blog TO BLOG, whether I have a fabulous shoot to share or not. So look out for a slew of multiple appearances in the New Year. Maybe 3 times a week or more? Oh geez, do I even have anything interesting to say 3 times a week??

2. Be HEALTHY (and maybe shed 20 lbs doing it). Yep, I had to throw in the stereotypical LOSE WEIGHT resolution in there, even if it was as a side note. It’s not one I started thinking about til after the babies came; and granted, every pound gained was well worth it, I need to start setting a healthy lifestyle example for those three munchkins. Recently, I took my husband to an awesome naturopath, and she suggested a meatless diet for my extremely carnivorous man. So a vegetarian he became, and I heard very little about aches and pains and feeling crummy. Then he had several helpings of Thanksgiving lunch, still felt OK, and thought he must be all better – a few cheeseburgers and Taco Bell nacho plates later..he’s back at square one. Case in point - too much of a good, greasy thing isn't so good after all. While I may not make the leap to vegetarianism right away, I do want to change my family’s lifestyle habits and be healthier (and happier)– eating better, exercising often, keeping doctor visits to a minimum, and ENJOYING life!

3. STIMULATE MY MIND and resist the TV – Translation: READ MORE BOOKS. There was a year that my husband and I got completely consumed with reality TV trash. Embarrassingly – and I really can’t believe I’m admitting this on the World Wide Web – we got a kick out of Flavor Flav and his love escapades and laughed our butts off every episode we just “happened” to catch every week. Then we’d say we’d never watch another one...and before we knew it, we were watching the season finale. I know, I know. Save the judgments. Then, in the last year, we watched the last season of 24, and proclaimed it the best show of all time (and this, I still do believe deep in my heart – so don’t hate if you’re not a Jack Bauer fan). We slowly bought every other season in the series and watched it all in a few months time (thank you Hollywood Video for closing down and allowing me to score whole seasons for under $10). And there are others, believe me – frankly, it’s really just gotten out of hand. It’s another one of those set-a-better-example things, and so I’m back to being a book worm. Growing up, I always had my nose in a book – and I’d have no problem if my daughters adopted the same habit, considering their own addiction to Good Luck, Charlie. The hubs is an avid reader (although he could lay off the $25 hard-cover books and wait til the paperback versions come out...just sayin’), so at least this can easily be a joint effort. 2-3 books a month is what I’m pledging to myself for 2011. I think I read 2 books this entire year (and way too many magazines..ugh).

4. Go HOME. I don’t know how realistic this is, honestly, but a visit is long overdue. I’m SO sad I’ll miss my high school reunion next week. A quick trip to American Samoa with the whole fam-bam would be a whopping $8K in round-trip airfares alone. Maybe I’ll be lucky and win the lottery (or maybe someone will need a wedding photographer in Samoa? I can recommend a great venue too...lol!), but my goal is to go home once in 2011. By then, it’ll be 5 years since I was home last – which was for a short, and sad 3 days only, to lay my grandfather to rest. It was my husband and oldest daughter’s first times to Samoa ever, and Eden was only 2 months old, so it doesn’t really count for her. My immediate family ALL live in the mainland now (as of 2004), but my grandma is there, and no matter WHAT – it’ll always be home.

5. FOCUS on my “WHY.” I took an amazing workshop in July by Natalie Norton, and she talked about finding our “why.” Why do we get out of bed in the morning? Why do we try at anything? Why do we do what we do? Nothing on God’s green earth matters or means more to me than my family. I’ve said it before – my children simply drive me to DREAM and DO. I’ve discovered a type of selflessness I didn’t know existed in me, with each of their births – and it continues to grow as they do. Ultimately, everything I do and everything I strive for – is for them. Whether it’s to support and feed and clothe them, or it’s to show them that they CAN do whatever they put their minds to, they are my “WHY,” and I’m thankful every day for having 3 particularly good reasons to get out there and get it done. I truly believe that focusing on my WHY will help me accomplish a LOT of goals I’m setting for the New Year – that’s for another post.

6. DISNEYLAND, here we come. Gotta take the kids to Disneyland. The girls begged me all year, and in 2011, I’m giving in. Nuff said.

7. Love MORE, complain LESS, and face adversity with a SMILE. Junior will love this one, I’m sure. This is a bit of a spiritual goal for me, and maybe one of the more important ones. I am human – as much as I like to filter it out on the handy dandy blog here (and that will happen less next year..see #1) – and loving without bounds comes without thinking for me for only a select few in my life (see #5 for about 3 examples). It’ll take time and practice, and probably a lot of prayer to get through this one, but I’m gonna try. This year has come with its share of achievements and happy times, along with a good deal of challenges and bumps in the road. Trials are inevitable. We all have good days and bad days, and trials can either build us up or break us down. Resolve to live and learn – as much as that’s easier said and done – and grow from it. That’s the attitude I’m adopting for the New Year.

8. TRY something new. I’m not much of a risk-taker. I’ll never bungee jump or skydive, and I will always conservatively opt for the safest option. Even my 401(k) investing is low-risk when the stock market’s doing great, and I think I’m young enough to take a few chances without losing my entire retirement savings. lol With that said, I’d like to try something new this year. Speaking of Natalie Norton, she said something pretty smart on her blog the other day: “I BELIEVE in specificity when it comes to goals. Which packs more punch? ‘I’m going to take up running.’ VS ‘I’m going to run the Gunstock Half Marathon on October 30th 2010 at 7:00am.’” TRUE THAT, right? So this last resolution will need updating later, because I haven’t found out what new thing I’d specifically like to try. But stay tuned, because when I do, I'll be blogging about it.

There it is, Internet - my big list. All long-winded and drawn out, but more importantly - officially in “writing,” so I can start owning up to it. Come June, when I usually forget what my New Year resolutions even were, I'll revisit this and we'll see where I ended up at the half-way mark :).

A GIRL IN A CHAIR : JASMINE STAR + YWD WORKSHOP | Rancho Las Lomas, California

I set two pretty lofty goals (in my opinion) for my photography business in 2011: 1) Attend a Jasmine Star workshop, and 2) Get published in some type of wedding publication - blog or print. So when I saw Jasmine Star's post about an exclusive, unique workshop she'd be doing, partnered with the fabulous Editor in Chief, Thea Lignos-Hargrove, & Creative Director, Cathryn VanBreene of Your Wedding Day magazine, I couldn't believe my luck. It was the perfect opportunity, and the very first workshop of its kind: a collaboration of a renowned photographer and a renowned magazine - how could I NOT jump at the chance? The workshop's focus would be on shooting editorially and submitting work for publication. The venue: the beautiful Rancho Las Lomas in the hills of Silverado, California. My excitement level? Through. The. ROOF. The experience itself? Indescribable. I walked away with a wealth of information and inspiration, and I am SO excited for what the new year will bring.

When I started this photography "venture," it was sort of on a whim, and I was unsure of where the road would take me. I had a love and passion for photography that I felt I needed to acknowledge at the very least - and whatever would happen next, I'd planned to simply enjoy the ride. In my very first blog post, I mentioned Jasmine Star, one of my utmost favorite wedding photographers, and I didn't think I'd so quickly get the chance to meet her, let alone shoot alongside her! Jasmine was just as down-to-earth and awesome as she comes across in her blog, and her husband JD was so friendly and welcoming as well.

STAR-struck! :) Not the most fabulous picture of me, but I take consolation in the fact that it's still a photo with J*!

I was SO excited to be meeting Thea and Cathryn of YWD too, and I was equally amazed with them! YWD is a wedding publication I love to read/look at, cover-to-cover. It was truly a welcomed opportunity to meet, in-person, the creative geniuses behind the scenes!!

The workshop was held on a Thursday and I'd originally planned to just fly in and fly back out. Instead, I ended up taking some vacation time and spending a few days in sunshine (getting to visit my mom again in less than 2 months - double score!). Sadly, I missed the soiree YWD hosted the evening before, but made it early to the workshop the next morning. You know you're a serious fan when your 4-year-old can peek out a car window and say, "Look -- there's Jasmine Star!" and be right! lol My little Eden LOVES watching J*'s CreativeLive videos with me :).

Four BREATHTAKING wedding sets were designed and set up for the next YWD publication, so I'm unable to post images of those until after the next issue of the magazine is released, but I, along with Jasmine and almost 30 other uber-talented photographers, did get to shoot two gorgeous models, and those images, I can post :).

I ♥ MY MOM

I could quite possibly have one of the best moms in this world. No joke.

Seeing as November's the month we recognize all the things we're especially thankful for, it'd be completely remiss of me not to do this post. I am utterly, totally, head-over-heels, don't-say-it-nearly-as-much-as-I-should, GRATEFUL for my mama. I'm not half the mom she is (and my daughters? they kind of agree..how sad is that!?), but I try. So let it be known, World Wide Web, that I HEART ♥ my mom - to the moon and back! I'm a mama's girl, and I'm not ashamed to say it. She is truly my very best friend, and I don't know what I'd ever do without her. She is a shining example of what a classy woman and doting mother is - and I am BLESSED.

I spent the better part of the week in L.A., enjoying the sunshine, a great photography workshop (more on that soon), relaxing with my 3 babies (and missing the hubs), and my MOM - her great cooking, her impeccably clean house, and just HER. I am always SO sad when it's time to head home, or when she leaves Seattle - suddenly, I'm whisked back in time to the week before I started college, thousands of miles from home, and having to say goodbye to my mom from my dorm room. And being heartbroken and unsure of whether I could be away from my mom that long. I'd call home (all the way to American Samoa) every day to talk to her. Ten years later, I'm STILL having serious mom-withdrawals, and daily phone calls still happen. lol!

So, Mom, THANK YOU for everything you do for me and my little family. And just as I did as a little girl, I still wanna be JUST. LIKE. YOU. when I grow up :). I love you more than there are words in this world to describe!! xoxoxo

I've been getting over a mild case of congestion and the flu, and getting my three munchkins over their little bouts too, so I've got a bit to catch up on!

A few weeks ago, Fancy Frenchwood, owner of Saké in Seattle, contacted me about photographing an event she'd be hosting on behalf of Child United. The event - a fundraiser - was held at the newly-opened Choice Gallery in Bellevue last Thursday - a great little gallery filled with grand pianos and artwork of all sorts. Several members of the community attended the event in support of Child United, an organization headed by Christine Umayam. The organization that focuses on educating impoverished children in many different countries is currently leading a serious effort to aid in disaster relief for victims in the wake of super typhoon Megi that devastated the Philippines just last week. Last year, Christine traveled with Child United to the Philippines after Typhoon Ketsana rendered so many natives homeless and helpless, bringing staple items, clothing, food and hope to survivors.

During the fundraiser, which included saké and wine tasting, Asian hor d'oeuvres and silent auctions, guests watched a slideshow prepared by Child United showing the devasation in the Philippines, and photos of children who were left without parents and homes, living in flood-stricken areas and struggling for survival. Both Christine and Fancy urged attendees to help support those in need, as 100% of proceeds from the Saké in Seattle event that evening went toward assisting Child United's relief effort.

Making a Difference - Christine Umayam and Fancy Frenchwood

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEDDING : SANDRA + MARCO | Cerritos, CA

I don't normally have the tendency to cry at weddings unless I have a serious emotional connection to the bride or groom - as in, a family member or very close friend. But on a hot California afternoon in September, I found myself having to blink back tears just so I could see through my camera lens - not once, but SEVERAL times during the special day that belonged to Marco & Sandra, or "Manu," as she was affectionately known by her family. A family who, I might add, felt like people I'd known for years by the end of the night. That's how great the day was.

I had the pleasure of second-shooting a spectacular wedding alongside Mapu Mataele of Mapuana Photography in Southern California a few weeks ago. With my 5-month-old son in tow, we hopped on a plane to Long Beach for the weekend and left Seattle's cold and gloom for sweltering California heat. Lucky for us, my son got to bond with his G-Mom (ahem, grandma *smiles*) while I spent a good part of Saturday helping to document an amazing day.

For my Seattle-weathered skin, the heat was almost unbearable at mid-day (yes, me, born and raised in hot and humid American Samoa, couldn't handle some real sunshine for a few hours...makes me sad just thinking about it). Mapu and I drove to Manu's brother's home where Manu and her bridal party were getting ready, and welcomed heaven-sent central air conditioning when we walked inside. Having never met Manu before, I knew we were in for a stylish, fabulous wedding at the sight of her stunning Maggie Sottero dress, Chinese Laundry heels, and the beautiful white phalaenopsis orchids that adorned her hair.

Marco and Manu solemnized their marriage and exchanged vows at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Artesia. The ceremony was beautiful, and the sounds of a well-harmonized Samoan choir filled the church. It was truly music to my ears!

Bridal party photos were done at the nearby Cerritos Sculpture Garden, and the light was divine.

The Bride & Groom Transportation was slick!

The reception was held at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel and the banquet room was decorated with vibrant colors and floral arrangements.

As is customary in Samoan weddings, the bride performed a Samoan siva, and Manu changed into traditional Samoan wear. In honor of her late father, she performed a second dance as well. The energy in the room was intense, and I found myself letting out a faaumu here and there in between shutter clicks...LOL! I was pretty impressed with Marco, who isn't Samoan, and his Samoan dancing abilities too!

Over the course of that day, I learned that Marco and Manu met in college, and they'd been together for several years since. I'd seen first-hand, and heard as witnessed by close friends and family, how well they complimented each other, and how much they loved one another. There is no doubt in my mind that they've found, together, their true life partners. It was truly a pleasure to be a part of their special day.

Lately, procrastination has been my middle name - heck, my first and last too for that matter. Leave it to me to get Samantha's maternity photos up after her baby has made his debut :). Baby Christian came only a week or so after his mama's photo sesh, so I'm glad that we at least were able to get some pictures done beforehand!

The weekend before we'd scheduled Samantha's shoot, I'd gotten an email from an old friend and high school classmate, Camilla. She and Samantha are great friends, and she wanted to get her a maternity shoot as a pre-baby gift and I was more than happy to provide it for her. We'd started to work out the logistics, and I'd found out Camilla had just been deployed, and was arranging for her friend's photo shoot all the way from Afghanistan via Facebook. What better friend than that?

Samantha and I met up at the Washington Museum of History for her photo session. I was so impressed with how much energy she had, just days from her due date :). I had a great time getting to know her, and in the little time we spent, I know Baby Christian is a lucky little guy to have Sam as his mom.

EDGEWATER HOTEL WEDDING: ZOE + KOLISI | Seattle, WA

The morning began with typical Seattle summer weather - a little overcast, a tiny bit chilly with a slight breeze. The sun burned through the clouds slowly, making its way through to warm up the day. The Seattle waterfront was buzzing as usual on a Sunday without rain. More often than not, the course of the day in these parts is dictated by temperamental Northwest weather. On this day, both the weather and the imminent events to take place dictated that the course of the day would be perfect.

The Edgewater Hotel overlooks the Puget Sound, and sits right on the water. When you step inside, the feel is elegant and sophisticated - something about it just steps any event up a few notches. The exquisite venue was the ideal location to celebrate Zoe and Kolisi's wedding day.

"Rare as is true love, true friendship is rarer." A close friend casually mentioned that she didn't know a couple who was more considerate of each other than Zoe and Kolisi. And in the midst of the commotion of their wedding day, nothing was more evident.

Zoe and Kolisi, thank you for allowing me to capture moments of your special day. Here's wishing you a lifetime of happiness and love!

THE LITTLE HEARTBREAKER...BABY "L" | Fife, WA

2010 has been a special year for my family - we were not only blessed with the birth of my son, but my nephew Lawrence as well, who is 7 weeks older than Israel, and who is as special and precious to me as my own babies :).

Earlier this year, I took photos of his mama Rose, who was anxiously awaiting Baby L's arrival. We took photos in Fife, and just a little more than 6 months later, we were taking photos again in the same spot to celebrate L's recent 6-month birthday. Babies definitely seem to make time go by quicker than we'd like sometimes, and I can hardly believe our little L is already half way to his first birthday. We love this little Handsome to no end - my daughters proudly call him their baby brother (and there is no telling Taimane otherwise!), and we relish all the time we get to spend with him!

I realize this is LONG, and way more pictures than I usually include in a blog post, but frankly - I couldn't limit my favorites to just a few of them!

Leilani is a senior and volleyball player at University of Hawai'i-Hilo (and, I should add, recently a summer accountant in Auburn, Washington!). She is beautiful, smart and a fabulous athlete...and SUCH a trooper for agreeing to take photos at these random spots in Tacoma..lol! We dodged several "admiring" onlookers, raced to get some good sunlight at after 8 pm (almost running some red lights in the process..oops!), and still managed to get some great shots.

And needless to say from her photos below, she redefines FIERCE...:). Love you Lani!

4 MONTHS OF BLISS

My little Handsome, you're 4 months old today!
(I know, right - ALREADY?!? That's what Mommy thinks at every birthday, and will probably always think when it comes to you and your sisters).

It has been 4 months of pure bliss, my sweet boy, and I have loved every moment so far.
(I can't wait for more!)

Your little smiles and giggles light up my day like you'll never know.

You are our constant reminder to notice and appreciate all the seemingly little things in life...the things that seem to fascinate your little mind so. I can watch you for hours and be completely content. I love the way you stare at your hands as you learn to grasp things, the way your whole face breaks into a smile when someone smiles at you, the way you look at all the things around you when you're outside, staying very silent, as if taking it all in and enjoying it little by little.

And more than anything, I love the way you recognize me, and start kicking with excitement, cooing away when I walk into the room, or just within your gaze. I get just as anxious :) - and inside, I'm kicking with excitement too ;).

You are WITHOUT A DOUBT a Mama's Boy, and frankly, I hope you always will be.
(without the silly, negative connotations people tend to associate with that, of course)

You bring us HAPPINESS in ways we could never explain.

There is truly something special about mothers and their daughters. When Angel contacted me about doing some photos with her mom who just reached a milestone birthday (the day after mine!), I was so excited to get together with them. She explained that they like to get them done every so often, and I thought there couldn't be a better idea than that! It's wonderful to see the bond between a mom and her daughter, even as grown women. Their friendship and love is obvious, and so great to witness.

Being the mom of two little girls, I can only hope that we share a similar relationship when they grow up and become mothers themselves.

Erin and Conor were models for Natalie Norton's Envision | Seattle workshop earlier this month. The stunning couple is recently engaged, and were so much fun to work with. As luck would have it, meeting the bride-to-be was even meant-to-be for me -- Erin is currently working on designing a new logo for me. She's uber talented, and can somehow make sense of my incoherent emailed "visions" of the design, and produce just what I was thinking!

We shot this session at two different times during the day in downtown Seattle, and the light was just perfect. The gorgeous couple is Anthropologie-styled, looking like they belong in a magazine!

ENVISION | SEATTLE : NATALIE NORTON WORKSHOP

Years ago, I lived in the small town of La'ie, Hawaii. I was a college student still finding my way, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Fast-forward almost a decade, and here I am - a mother, a wife, an accountant, and an ever-aspiring photographer, living in the Northwest. Little did I know that in that small town of La'ie, was a woman who would also become a photographer - an amazingly successful one - and that it would be thousands of miles (and many years later) from Hawaii's North Shore that I would meet her, learn from her, and be inspired by her.

I'd first heard of Natalie Norton, the photographer, a couple of years ago when I'd come across her blog. I'd bookmarked it, and became a regular reader. Natalie and I have mutual friends, and I'd heard only the nicest things about her. Her blog is a showcase of beautiful images, and her posts are well-written and heartfelt. It isn't difficult to read through her blog and not feel an instant connection to her - she is open and honest, and her words are moving and real.

So when she tweeted that she would be hosting a workshop in Seattle, I jumped on it. I was 9 months pregnant with my son, about to go on maternity leave, figured my baby would be around 2-3 months old once the workshop rolled around, and I decided it would all work out. I knew I'd probably be on hiatus from my photography business for a little while as I tried to find some balance with a new baby, but I didn't want to miss the opportunity.

The Envision | Seattle workshop was, in essence, just what I needed. Hosted at Hotel Max in downtown Seattle, I enjoyed an insightful, fun day with Natalie and an awesome group of photographers. Natalie was just as open and honest as she comes across in her blog, sharing so much of herself and her business philosophies with the group. She is as beautiful inside and she is out, and I'm still so thrilled I was able to attend her workshop. We photographed the Prang family, and the stunning Erin & Conor, recently engaged (photos to follow!).

SUNNY DAYS

Sunny days come few and far between around here, but we've been lucky to see the sun and enjoy some warm weather lately. Seems like any time the sun comes out, we make a fast dash to a waterfront - usually one of our two favorite spots: Alki Beach and Browns Point Park. The kids love it, and have smiles plastered on their faces for hours!

There's nothing better than these kinds of days - we get a chance to get away from the grind, and our busy lives, and just enjoy each other, the warmth, and the beautiful views.

My husband catches great shots of the awesome scenery (photo credit to him for those shots below); and the girls give me tons to work with, always ready when the camera comes out.

Neglect

I've neglected my blog and photography lately..bad.

My only excuse is that I've been thoroughly enjoying maternity leave and spending time with my precious son, and my sweet daughters who suddenly seem so grown up. Nothing is more rewarding, and I'm savoring every minute I get to spend at home before returning to work, and getting back to the grind. When the time comes, and I have to get back to my old routine, the camera will come out again and take pictures of people and things other than my home and family :). I'm excited - the blog needs a revamp, and my long break has tons of ideas running around in my head.

In the meantime, I'll be neglecting this for a little while longer for these three munchkins who steal my heart every day.

I'm happy to announce that my little man is finally here! He's perfect in every way, and once again, I am amazed that I can love this child as much as my other children, when I didn't ever think it was possible to love any one person that much! Our hearts' capacity to love is truly immeasurable. Our baby boy is only 5 days old, and already, I can't imagine what life could've been like without him. He is his sisters' (and parents, of course) pride and joy, and they're thrilled he's here.

His dad gave him his first name, and three middle names after it! Baby Israel was born on April 9th at 9:35 am, and weighed in at a good 8 lbs 12 oz, and measured 21 inches long. Here are a few photos of our newest addition, who melts our hearts every time we set eyes on him!

I'm planning to do some Easter mini sessions this weekend in the Seattle/Tacoma area - there are ~~four~~ TWO spots available on Saturday ~~and 2 on Sunday~~, and will be $75/session.

Here's the jist of the mini session:

- 45 minutes shooting time at a location of your choice
- At least 10 edited images blogged/emailed to you within a few days (for prints in time for Easter)
- A CD of edited, high-resolution images

For an additional $25, you can order fifty (50) custom 6.5" x 7" Easter cards (with envelopes) that will be ready as soon as 3/30/10.

Growing too fast!

In a few weeks, our family will grow by 1, and we will welcome our baby boy into our crazy household :). It seems like just yesterday we were bringing our girls home for the first time, and now they're toddlers, approaching school faster than I can believe. My husband constantly says that they will be the best big sisters ever, and I'd have to agree - they're ecstatic for a baby brother!

I wish I could slow time down sometimes; they've definitely grown way too fast for me. It's always so special to me to see that while they bicker as sisters often do, they're the best of friends too. I hope they always stay that way. ♥

Lately, Eden's been quite the ham and jumps in front of the camera any chance she gets, while Taimane couldn't be bothered most of the time..lol!

Official Teenager!

HAPPY 13th BIRTHDAY ELIJAH! It's hard to grasp that today, you are an official teenager :). You've grown up so much! On this day, and every day, we hope you know how much you are loved.

Becoming a teenager is a special time, and the years ahead will play a huge part in the man you become someday. Remember to make the most of every challenge, and every opportunity, and great things will always be in store for you. I know you have the potential to become anything you can dream up if you put forth your efforts and try your best - visualize your goals and remember that "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take." We are always behind you, and hope for all the best for you. Make good choices and never forget that you have a family who loves you dearly.

I took these photos last summer and never got around to posting them. My baby sister is the namesake of Tiare Photography :). She is sweet as can be, and I love her beyond all words. As much as she's grown over the years, I don't think I could ever see her as older than 2! She's a great aunty to our girls, and the best little sister ever ♥.

For as long as I can remember, Tiare has been quite the ham for the camera ;)! We had a good time taking a few pictures of her at a park close to my mom's house in California.

I've been MIA from my blog for a long while - the "busy-ness" of my days have reached an all-time high! I have a couple of other shoots to post, but wanted to get this one posted before the start of another crazy week!

This shoot was special to me for many reasons, and it was truly an honor to take these pictures. Rose is one of my very best friends, and in these photos, she's almost 37 weeks along with her baby boy, who we affectionately call "Baby L." There are some things of which I am COMPLETELY certain and have no doubt in my mind about - and one of those things is what an amazing, wonderful mother Rose will be, and how lucky and blessed her son and all his future siblings will be to have her as their mom. Rose is a second mom to my girls who love her to no end, and I know motherhood will be second nature to her! Rose is so many incredible things, and I am so blessed to have her in my life.

She is absolutely RADIANT in these photos and will make one hot mama!! :)

Side Note: I'm posting this on February 4th, but I actually started preparing this blog post on January 14th. Waaaay behind on photography stuff, and just getting back into the swing of things!

Over the weekend, I met up with my friend Kealoha and her little family - it's been YEARS since I've seen Kea, but thanks to Facebook :) and email, we've kept in touch. We met in college in Utah, and it was great to catch up again after so long.

Kea and her husband Troy just welcomed their brand new, beautiful baby girl into the world a few months ago. Baby Kellen joins her "sister" Meadow, Kea and Troy's adorable dog. The Eseras were visiting from Oregon, and it was nice to take some of their first family photos!

We met up in Renton late in the afternoon, so we struggled with the light a bit. Thankfully, it didn't rain!

After photos, Junior and I met up with them again for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory - yummy food and good company :). It was great seeing you guys!!

A Year in Review: 2009

It's hard to believe the last day of 2009 is here! And what a year it's been - both personally and professionally for me. In June of this year, I decided to pursue photography - a quiet desire I'd had for a long time. I was nervous to start, and didn't know how things would turn out, but I never would've imagined I'd learn so much, meet so many great new people, and find a certain kind of happiness in doing something I loved, and sharing it with others. On a personal level, I am blessed with an extra-supportive husband, daughters who light up my life, and a baby boy on his way. I couldn't ask for more.

In review, here are some of my favorite images of 2009. Thank you family, friends, colleagues and clients for your support and for making this year so special! I'm excited to see what new challenges and opportunities 2010 brings, and can't wait for all that's in store. Manuia le Tausaga Fou (Happy New Year)!

Happy Birthday Taimane!

Yes, it was only 3 days ago that I blogged a "Happy Birthday" post to my now 4 year old, Eden :). Our daughters are 12 months and 3 days apart, and it's been quite entertaining (to say the least) having them so close together! Looking back, I wouldn't have it any other way. I was definitely nervous when I found out I was expecting her, and I truly didn't know how it would be possible to love another child as much I loved Eden, but Taimane has shown me the capacity of a heart and the ability to love knows no bounds, and I can't imagine life without her.

Taimane is our baby, and even though she's just a year younger than Eden, she makes sure it's known far-and-wide, that she is the BABY. It would be remiss of me to say she's just our baby, because from the day she was born, she's been enthralled with her Aunty Rose, and does claim to be her baby first :)! It will interesting come Spring of next year when two baby brothers will be born for her - ours, and Aunty Rose's son in February.

Though only 3 and proudly "the baby," she is mature beyond her years, and has a lively personality and facial expressions for everything. She is talkative and her vocabulary multiplies daily. She LOVES food, and is no doubt her daddy's daughter..lol! She loves to sing and has the sweetest voice. She can be defiant and headstrong when she wants to be, but is lovable and kind at any other time. Our days wouldn't be the same without her antics :).

Happy Birthday Eden!

A seemingly-short 4 years ago, life - as I knew it - completely changed. Early one Sunday morning, our daughter Eden was born, a hefty 9-1/2 lbs with a full head of hair and a great pair of lungs - and I swore my eyes never beheld a more beautiful sight. She was perfect in every possible way, and I couldn't believe she was mine. I fell in love with her instantly, and each day since, that love has multiplied infinitely.

She's grown into the sweetest little girl, and I truly believe the Lord was mindful of me when He blessed me with her first. She is a great big sister and such a special spirit in our home, with a bright personality and extra loving heart.

Yes, you read the title correctly - five generations in a family! It's a rare thing, and such a blessing, and I was honored to document this for them.

Recently, you may remember seeing handsome baby Zander on the blog, and not too long before that, his parents, Kayla and Ken, anticipating his arrival. These days, I love when I get lucky with great weather! It was a beautiful day - perfect for this beautiful family! I met the Lytles at Bradley Lake in Puyallup, and we took photos while walking around the 1.5 mile perimeter of the lake. I had a great time getting to know Kendra and Shaun, and their 3 adorable kids. How cute is their little guy!? He is 19 months of fun, and he did great with his family pictures; I could've photographed him all day. Even when he got a little fussy toward the end, he was still cute as can be!

In the late morning before the UW Huskies won the Apple Cup and blew out Washington State at Husky Stadium, I met the Colbeth and Gervais families at a sorority house on Greek Row for some family photos.

I first met Karen Gervais almost a year and a half ago when our daughters started preschool together. Karen's mom is a housemom at the sorority house we met at, and it was an excellent spot for photos! Hannah is the sweetest little girl, and absolutely adorable all around!! She belongs to a wonderful family, who quite obviously love her to no end :). I had such a nice time with them (and with the Colbeths, to follow soon)!!

More than anything in the world, I LOVE being a mommy. My girls light up each and every day of mine, and I can't think of anything that makes me happier than seeing them smile, hearing them sing, or getting big hugs and kisses from them. Last night, Taimane was singing her rendition of a dozen different songs, and Junior couldn't help but tear up at the sound of it. I look at Eden and can't believe how fast the time has gone, and the sweet baby girl we had just yesterday it seems, is about to be 4!

We were so excited to find out recently that we'd be adding to our little family in April! Junior has been gushing about what amazing big sisters the girls will be to their new sibling, and today we found out, that they'll be big sisters to a baby BROTHER! Here's a quick profile shot of our baby boy on his way!! We couldn't be more blessed.

Last month, I met up with a great group of friends who are AMAZING photographers-mothers-&-women for a weekend inspirational retreat in Park City, Utah. We had the best time hanging out; talking photography, life, and everything in between; snacking on SCRUMPTIOUS chocolate toffee almonds; and enjoying the plush, Marriott hotel beds that we each had to ourselves! It was a fabulous weekend, and I flew back to Seattle feeling ready to take on my love and passion for photography in an entirely new way. Baby Zander Jay is now a month old! Just a few short months ago, his mom and dad were anticipating his arrival, and now their healthy baby boy is here :). We took some of his newborn pictures on a Sunday afternoon at home, mostly while he napped. My best friend Rose and my girls came along for the shoot, and Eden and Taimane couldn't wait to hold him and give him lots of love. He's the most precious little boy, and definitely his mama's heart!

After a couple days of a difficult computer, I can finally get some family sessions up!

The Guymons recently welcomed a new baby boy into their family, just a few months ago (on my birthday, I should add :)!). Now complete, their family took some of their first family pictures together this weekend at the History Museum in Tacoma. The Guymons are good friends of ours - Alaina is our girls' preschool teacher who they love! They're completely enraptured with baby Traysen, best buddies with Trendon, and adore the boys' big sister Krailyn.

They flew in to Portland from Utah to visit Seattle's brother, Shaun, and family, and they all drove up to Washington for a few days. I'm so glad I got to spend a little while with them, it was great to catch up!

One of the most rewarding things about a photography business is having a great way to reconnect with old friends!

I've known Shaun & Lydia since high school and vividly remember them as high school sweethearts :). They now share three gorgeous kids together. We're thousands of miles away (and many years) from high school and home, but we were able to meet up on their family trip to Washington. The weather was kind to me today, and after yesterday's rain, today was blue skies and sunshine!

We met at the Wine & Roses Country Estate in the Auburn/Black Diamond area, and the owner of the place was so nice to let us take some pictures, even with an upcoming wedding later in the day. We maneuvered around a bridal party and wedding set-up, and managed to get through an entire family session :).

It was so good to see the Umis, along with Shaun's older brother Seattle and wife Phyllis, whose photos will be up next.

Keep in touch guys! I'm so glad we were able to get together for a bit today!

Last week, I blogged a set of family photos and expressed how thankful I was that it didn't rain. Yesterday, I met the Barriers for the first time for family photos at Alderwood Park in NE Tacoma, and didn't manage the same luck with the weather. However, I am thankful that the Barriers were such troopers, even when the rain started to come down in the middle of their shoot! Mason, Ethan and Chloe are adorable kids, and were so much fun to photograph - even in the cold and rain, they managed to smile through it all! We were lucky to catch some of the beautiful changing colors of the season, even if it was a little (OK, a lot) damp out.

Happy Halloween!

Our girls didn't want to sit still for Halloween pictures, but I was able to get a couple of them with their Nana a couple of days before Halloween, on their way to their preschool Halloween party. Every year since Taimane's first Halloween, the girls have gone over to their Nana's for Halloween treats and LOVE being able to show off their costumes :).

This year, Eden decided she wanted to be a cheerleader and for a good while, Taimane would echo, "And I'm going to be a pom-pom!" When we took her to the costume store, she saw a Little Bo Peep costume she liked and decided on that instead (thank goodness, or I'd have had a real interesting time trying to figure out how to dress her as a pom-pom!).

Rain is inevitable in the Pacific Northwest, and living in Seattle, I've tried to grow used to the fact. I've been so excited, though, for this family's photo shoot, that I've been PRAYING for dry weather at the very least (sunshine, if I had it my way, but no rain would suffice!). Lucky for me, the entire shoot was rain-free. I could photograph this family for hours - they're beautiful, inside and out! This was definitely a fun shoot! I met up with Sara, Sal and their beautiful daughters, Alina and Mya, at Spooner Farms. It was my first time there in all of my 5 years of living in Washington - I'm not sure how I never managed to go during the Fall! Almost as soon as I started snapping the first photos of this gorgeous family (they belong in a magazine, look at them!), I could smell corn roasting and sweet caramel apples not far from us. There was a huge Pumpkin Patch, barrels of all sorts of squash, pony rides, a corn maze, games, animals, and more. The Cendejas' go to Spooner Farms every year to pick pumpkins, and I was more than happy to get a few photos of such a fun family tradition :).

Heaven Sent : SHAWNA & SAM | Maternity - Lakeland Hills, WA

I met Shawna and Sam for the first time on Saturday. They are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first child in just a couple of months. In these photos, Shawna is 28 weeks along with Baby Caleb. He will be lucky to have such awesome parents! They were so nice, and I had a great time with them.

We took photos at two different parks in Lakeland Hills - the first was quiet and had trails and huge trees; some with leaves changing, as late as Autumn is for us this year. The second park was busier, with a baseball diamond complete with a game going on, and a playground. Hearing playful shrieks from toddlers and boys yelling during their baseball game, we laughed and commented on all Shawna and Sam had to look forward to :). Kids are the BEST!

I'm so excited for you guys!! Parenthood is the most amazing thing ever, and I have no doubt you will enjoy every minute of it. Congratulations again! Hope you guys like your pictures :).

Precious Moments : KATELYNN, DYLAN & JAYLYNN | Costa Mesa, CA

The last time I saw my niece Katelynn, she was maybe 5 or 6, at my cousin Jenn's wedding in San Diego. She and my sister Tiare are about the same age, and they played and danced at the wedding together - both so little and so adorable! All these years later, Katelynn is a beautiful young lady and a great big sister to her brother Dylan and baby sister Jaylynn, who I'd gotten to meet for the first time :). All 3 were always ready for me with dazzling smiles! These three gorgeous kids belong to my cousin Andrea and her husband John.

I vividly remember my 7th birthday that we celebrated one summer in California. We went to Chuck E. Cheese, and I was in heaven! My cousins who I rarely saw growing up had come along, and I was thrilled. Twenty years later, after some fun photo shoots, the same cousins who had celebrated my birthday way back when, took us to Chuck E. Cheese, with all of our kids in tow :). It was a treat for me that Junior and the girls could meet everyone, and we had a great time.

My cousin Jenn and her husband Vicente are Mom & Dad to beautiful little Marley Anuhea. In a few months, Miss Marley will be a big sister! She ate the camera right up :), and was so fun to take pictures of!

In Loving Memory : PuHee Woo, age 11, of Asili, American Samoa

Tiare Photography is named after my baby sister Tiare, who I hold as near and dear to my heart as my own daughters. She and I are 16 years apart, and so, in many ways, she's seemed more like my child than my sister. When I had decided to start my business, I thought about several names, and found there was an "Eden Photography" and no one pronounces my daughter Taimane's name correctly, and then I thought of my Tiare, and knew that was the name I wanted for my photography business.

Yesterday, my mom called me at work and told me that Tiare's best friend, PuHee Woo, in American Samoa was missing after the tragic earthquake and tsunami had hit two days before. I couldn't believe it and said a prayer for PuHee hoping she would be OK, and just a little while later, my mom called again to let me know that and both PuHee and her mother were gone. My heart ached for my baby sister who would be devastated by the news, and for PuHee's father and sister who would have to go on without their wife and mother, daughter and sister.

All I could remember as I digested the news, was Tiare as a little girl, telling me all about her very best friend PuHee - everything was PuHee this, and PuHee that. She loved her dearly, and at 11 years old, I am so sad that she has to deal with the pain of losing such a close friend. PuHee's life was just beginning.

Tiare wrote her own tribute to PuHee that broke my heart to read:

PuHee, you were an amazing friend with such a sweet heart and spirit. We all miss you and your Mom, but we know you both are happy where you are. I cried when I heard about the earthquake and tsunami in Samoa. I hoped that you and your family were safe. Then I had gotten the news that you and your Mom had passed away.

My Mom and I cried and cried, but my Mom reassured me that you did not go alone, and that made me feel better but at the same time, sad. I thought about your Dad and Gabi, and I know they feel a lot worse. I have pictures of you and some memoirs, and realized they were all I have left of you.

You were my best friend and you will always be, now and forever. PuHee, may you and your Mom, Rest In Peace, we all love you so very much. Our hearts and tears go out to both Mr. Woo and Gabi for losing a wife, a mother, a daughter and a sister.

My mom sent an email this morning about PuHee that I also wanted to share:

Thursday, Oct 1st 2009....

Today we learned that my daughter Tiare's close and dearest friend PuHee Woo and her Mom, Mrs. Mija Woo were among the victims of the tsunami that struck our beautiful islands of American Samoa & Samoa.

My heart broke into pieces as I received this devastating news. Ever since the tragedy, I have been glued to my computer screen, my phone, TV news, anywhere I could get information from. When Tiare saw photos of Leone village she cried and was worried about her friend who resided in the village of Asili not far from Leone. She would constantly ask if she could use the computer to check if PuHee had sent an email. After speaking to her Grandma on the phone, she asked me if Grandma could check on PuHee and her family to see if they needed help and to maybe take them up to her house. I kept reassuring her not to worry and that PuHee & her family were safe and with the phone lines down, my Mom couldn't reach anyone in those areas.

Yesterday after school I had to break the news of the loss of her friend to her. She took it very hard. We had just seen Puhee when we went home for a visit 6 weeks ago. Tiare met up with some of her old friends from South Pacific Academy and she was so excited to see and spend time with them. It's been 3 years since we've been home and PuHee was at our house several times during our visit. As I watched the two of them, so much more grown up then the last time they'd been together, it was as if we had never left. Tiare & PuHee have been friends since Kindergarten and ever since then, they shared a special bond and became best friends. Last night Tiare and I said a little prayer for PuHee, her Mom and all the victims of this horrific tragedy, especially for her Dad and little sister who were left behind.

Now I read the stories of those who survived but have lost everything, and I am truly humbled. The material things of this world are minute and replaceable compared to the loss of lives taken away too soon. We continue to be reminded of life's challenges and how short it really is. Today, let's hold our children a little longer and tighter than ever. Let's be strong, keep our faith and continue to pray for our families and friends during this very difficult time.

Orange County, CA Disaster Relief Effort

My friend, Brian Mauga, a firefighter with the Long Beach Fire Department, sent me the following email today:

Hi Pua,

I was wondering if you could post a pick-up location on your page that is in the Orange County area. I will be there today with friends and family collecting and going to the Red Cross. Also, I went to my dentist and every other office in the plaza and were able to get cases of tooth brushes and tooth paste. Just an idea for people that want to give but are financially having problems. We were very lucky and blessed for what we receive and people were more then happy to donate. Thanks again for everything and keep up God's work ;)

For the entire month of October, I will be offering $50 sessions for all new bookings for any type of photo shoot throughout the month in the Seattle/Tacoma and outlying areas. If you are in the Southern California area, my friend Mapu is joining in and running the same special. 100% of all proceeds will be sent to American Samoa to aid in disaster relief and financial aid for suffering families, after the tragic earthquake and tsunami hit my tiny island home on September 29th, 2009.

Much of the coastal areas of American Samoa and Samoa are in ruins, and a large part of the population live near the ocean. Many homes have been destroyed, and families left homeless. Many people have lost their parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins or children. My baby sister, Tiare, lost her best friend in Samoa who was just 11 years old. I cannot begin to imagine what any of those who experienced such a tragedy are going through, and wish I were home to help. It is difficult to be so many thousands of miles away from home, and I am left feeling helpless every time more news surfaces.

California is one of my absolute favorite places to visit because I have so much family there! On my last trip in July, thanks to Facebook, and my friends Sa and Christine, I was able to meet up for a quick visit with my cousin Christopher and his wife Myra, and their two adorable kids, Noah and Macey. It had been several years since I had seen Chris and Myra, and it was so good to catch up for a bit. Luckily, we had the chance to get together again on this trip, complete with all our families, for a photo shoot and Chuck E. Cheese! Stay tuned for Chris' sisters' families up next too - it was a mini reunion, and it was great for my little family to meet everyone.

Still playing catch up on the blog - caught a bad bug on our vacation, and trying to manage through it, and post more of the great shoots from last week :).

Honestine is the sweetest girl! She was shy as could be at first, but you'd hardly notice in these photos. I had some terrific help from my MOM :) to pose Honestine for several of the shots (thanks Mom!). Honestine is a senior at Carson High School, and kicks off our "Stunning Senior" portraits for the Class of 2010. She's big sister to Tyson, and such a great big sister at that! I had a fun time with both their photo shoots - thanks again you guys!

Honestine, here's hoping your last year of high school is filled with nothing but great memories and accomplishments! Dream big; the world is full of endless possibilities for you! *hugs*

Being a mommy of two little girls, I can quickly relate to a mommy-daughter bond :), and it was so sweet to see between these two. Maylene is a brand new mommy to precious baby Zeniah, who is as beautiful as her mama, and it was such a treat to photograph them. Zeniah is almost two months old in these photos, and was so cooperative in front of the camera, even on a warm (OK, *really* hot for the Seattle-weathered photographer), California afternoon.

I have a ton of posts to catch up on! Our LA/Vegas trip was great, and we're a little sad to be back in the swing of things at home. We had a blast, and were able to see family and friends that we haven't seen in ages. The kids were awesome travelers, so that made me one happy mom!

My first session was with little Tyson, who is 4-1/2 years of fun! He was an excellent sport with just a tiny bit of coaxing (his biggest smiles were given at the mention of possible "toys" after the shoot ;)). He was a ham once he got comfortable, and I had a great time running around after him, and I didn't stop laughing the entire time. He is beyond cute, and a self-proclaimed mama's boy - it was the sweetest thing hearing him tell his mom how much he loved her! Definitely a heartbreaker in the making!

Los Angeles, CA / Las Vegas, NV Trip Next Week!

Heading to LA and Vegas next week! It's been a little over a year that our family went on an airplane trip together, and I'm hoping my 2-year-old will be better on the plane this time than she was the last time..lol! Not 10 minutes into our flight, I became the mom that everyone stares at, because her child won't stop screaming..eek. :\ Planning to celebrate my mom's birthday and go to Junior's alma mater's football game in Vegas...go Warriors! Hopefully, we'll get to catch up with some family and friends we haven't seen in a while too.

Heaven Sent : KAYLA & KEN | Maternity - Tacoma, WA

A year ago today, our family had our very first professional family photos done by Naomi Masina (always an inspiration to me!). It's amazing to see how much our girls have grown since. I'm always a little sad when I see how much they've changed and sometimes wish I could go back in time to when they were littler.

I had the pleasure of photographing Kayla & Ken today at Jack Hyde Park on Ruston Way, and thought back to when we were in their shoes, anxiously awaiting our daughter Eden's birth. Time flies so quickly! Kayla & Ken, savor every moment!

In these photos, Kayla is almost 33 weeks along with Zander Jay. It doesn't seem so long ago that Kayla came and told me she was expecting :). Zander will be blessed with wonderful parents, who are excitedly anticipating his arrival. Truly one of the most beautiful pregnant women I've ever seen, Kayla was so easy to photograph! I have no doubt that Ken will be an excellent dad - his love for Kayla is so apparent and was easy to capture in the photos. They've been married for 5 years, yet still seem as in love as newlyweds. I am so excited for them!

My Munchkins!

April and Noel are sisters, and we originally planned the shoot to include their brother between them who was visiting from overseas. He wasn't able to come, so we did a sisters shoot instead, just as the sun was setting at Saltwater State Park on a beautiful Monday evening. We met up at about 7, and took pictures until we got kicked out of the park at sundown! I had such a fun time with them :)!

J.R. and April "Tala" Pulu are my nephew and niece-in-law. We'd taken a few shots of them together during a shoot of April and her sister Noel (up next!) at Saltwater State Park in Des Moines, and I thought I'd make it a separate post. I can remember J.R. and Tala going to senior prom like it was yesterday. Several years later, they're married with three beautiful blessings - Jayden, L.J., and Jayla. LOVE these two and their little family so much! Our girls and their kids are all about the same age, and it's great that they have each other to grow up with.

Precious Moments : EDEN & TAIMANE

Have a few shoots to catch up on, but had these pictures of the girls ready to post. Time is flying too fast! We were just going through baby pictures the other day and couldn't get over how quickly they've grown - here they are, total toddlers and on the brink of school.

So close in age, our girls are either the best of friends or the worst of enemies, so there's never a dull moment in our house! From the time they were each just a few months old, they've LOVED the camera. That obviously hasn't changed at all! LOL!

What Matters Most

Since flying back from California, busy days have reached an all-time high for me. I firmly believe there aren't enough hours in the day for everything that I'd like to get done. I've also thought that maybe I need to step back and reprioritize a little bit, to at least get the most out of the hours I do have, and maybe spend less time on the endless list of tasks I have, and more time on what matters most. My 3-year-old brought this to my attention last night. At 3, she is observant beyond belief sometimes, and has been putting things into perspective for me, really, from the moment she was born.

Of all that I am and could ever be, I've said countless times before that I am proudest of being a mom. There is truly nothing in this world that brings me greater happiness. As my days get busier and busier, I have been guilty of simply making sure their necessities are taken care of before tackling the next task, and very little to nothing more than that. The quality time gets sacrificed for more hours to spend at work, or on projects that need to get done. After putting them to bed, I'm usually up for another several hours, trying to get ahead of my to-do list.

Yesterday was no exception. Taimane decided she wanted to spend more time with her Aunty Rose, so I picked up Eden from her house and headed home. I made sure she had something to eat and got her out some crayons and paper to draw with, before heading to get some work done. As I turned to leave her to all the artistic possibilities her little heart and hands could render up, she stopped me.

Mommy, wait. Can you sit next to me? I agreed and sat down, telling her I would for a few minutes. Can we read a book? I obliged, and she found a Curious George book she got last winter. It's about a snowy day, and as I read, she stopped me after every few words and asked me when it would snow again, and when it did, could she go out in our yard and wear snow shoes like George, etc. I indulged her questions and answered them all. At the end of the book, she clapped her hands and said, The End! and thanked me profusely for reading to her.

Anytime, I replied, and start to leave again, my mind full of all the things I should be getting done. OK, she said, Can we read another book then? I almost said no, but the look on her face melted my heart, and I sat down to read four more books. After they were all done, she smiled at me and gave me a hug.

Now, let's watch cartoons, Mommy! I hugged her quickly back and told her maybe another time, I have a lot of work to do.

Tears welled up in her eyes and she turned her face into a couch cushion. You work all the time. You hurt my feelings, you know?

I think my heart broke into a million pieces, and suddenly I couldn't remember a single thing on my long to-do list. Lately, Eden's discovered how to verbalize when someone offends her or makes her unhappy in any way, by saying that he or she has hurt her feelings. I sat back down with her and pulled her onto my lap, apologizing for not making more time for her.

When I became a parent, I told myself that I'd never put work or anything before my children, and somehow, things had turned out that way. I spent a good hour and a half with Eden before she decided she wanted to go and play, and didn't need me to stick around. I was behind on editing photos, and behind on paperwork and a month close, but the little time I spent away from it all, I wouldn't ask back. An hour and a half spent with my baby girl was the best spent time possible. At the end of the day, that was what mattered most. Mommy loves you, Eden Girl!
